Richard Currey's CROSSING OVER: The Vietnam Stories earned standing ovations -- and tearful audience members -- in a powerful stage adaptation presented June 21-24 by lead actor Andrew Sneed and his New York-based cast. These workshop performances were hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville and performed in the University's Chan Auditorium under the direction of Ron Harris.
Working from Currey's book, an impressionistic collage of poetic vignettes, along with a script version Currey wrote a few years ago, Andrew Sneed crafted a new adaptation. With Sneed in the lead role as a veteran recalling his service as a 20-year old Marine medic, along with the gifted cast of four other actors, Crossing Over became a textured play combining the action of combat, the interactions -- by turns wistful, angry, frightened, and affectionate -- of a Marine fire team, and the intimate reflections of a veteran. Performed against the evocative set design of Emmy-winner David Harwell, the play carries a potent resonance with current events.
These workshop performances represent the first phase of collaboration between Currey, Sneed, and Harris. The play will be refined and revised for future performances, with current plans to bring the production to Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York.
